Hurricanes, Birthdays and Halloween

Warning: Long and picture heavy post ahead!

What a crazy couple of days it has been! I hope you're all safe and dry and made it through Sandy in one piece!  We have been without power for two days and aren't looking at getting it back for another five days or so.  We had some damage to our house, but nothing not too easily fixed (I hope.)  We finally threw in the towel after the fireplace ceased to warm the house and our faucets stopped giving us water and headed to my parents' house in Pennsylvania.  Now the kiddos get to experience Halloween and we have tv and internet back in our live - you never know how much you miss them until they are gone!  Being so close to NYC (less than 15 miles) made this experience even more crazy, especially seeing the city shut down.  We are still wondering the status/fate of my family's house at the shore in NJ.  All in all, we can count our blessings and be thankful we are all okay.  This is definitely one for the books and an experience that will not be forgotten.

This is how we have spent the last couple of days:  making the most out of our gas stove (stove top pop corn!) and spending some quality time with our wine collection (I use the term collection VERY loosely here.)

Anyways.... so today is Halloween.  Always a good excuse for a costume flashback of my little lady!

Halloween also happens to be Josh's birthday (poor guy.)  Last year it got snowed out and this year hurricaned out.  He can't catch a break.  But he is the best dad and our kiddos love him and spending Halloween with him.  Cue photo dump.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Be Back Soon...

I'm sure you have heard about the lovely little tropical storm that is Sandy... her pre-effects have made our internet virtually unusable (it has been shaky for the last few days eek!) and we are filling everything we can with water and have brought every possession outdoors in.  Apparently NYC is supposed to get smacked with this and we happen to live just a couple of miles outside the city.  It's already pouring rain and blowing howling winds around us! Work, school, public transportation, etc. are shut down and all the stores are emptied and closed.  We have a stack of candles, flash lights and batteries in our kitchen and are trying to find ways to use the food in our fridge before it goes to waste.  Sending good thoughts to everyone this will affect and be back to normal blogging when power/internet is back!

p.s. Greyson is 9 months old.  How did time go so fast?!
Stay safe friends!

Recipe: Creamy Turkey Sauce

This is a random recipe I came up with one night when I needed something from nothing in my fridge.  I like extra lean ground turkey for low fat protein and I have a tendency to love creamier sauces.  Here is what I had...

My Ingredients:
-Extra lean ground turkey
-Light cream
-Olive oil
- NOT the mozzarella
-Reduced fat cream cheese (not pictured)

I diced the onion and garlic and sauteed them with the ground turkey on medium for about 12 minutes with a couple of teaspoons of olive oil.

Then I added about 1/2- 3/4 a cup of the light cream.  I let this simmer for a couple of minutes.

I decided it looked too thin of a consistency so I added in a couple of tablespoons of light cream cheese.  I let this simmer and blend for about five minutes, stirring frequently.  I also added in a three teaspoons of parmesan and a couple of pinches of salt.

This is the finished product!  I cooked some fiber pasta and added diced tomatoes and red pepper flakes.  For something thrown together, I thought it tasted delicious and ate more the next day with some quinoa.  Yum!

Tuesday Randoms

I have so many random thoughts going through my head first thing in the am.  I blame the coffee.  And the Internet.  Here are today's...

I'm always on the hunt for the perfect cross-body/messenger style, etc. etc. type bag that isn't too big or too small.  I want to be able to fit my things in it so the diaper bag isn't weighed down and so that I don't need to lug the diaper bag AND a heavy purse around with me.  I have been eyeing this Prada one in black.

Is it too old school to carry a nylon Prada bag?  Or is it just so practical when everything you own is covered in spit up or food?

I'm also on a big Gwyneth Paltrow kick lately.  She can get on my nerves when she gets all up on her high horse about things, but I would kill to look like her and I love, love, love her simple, chic outfits.

I have been drooling over practically everything on the Kate Spade site (horror - there is a lack of a Kate Spade store in the Short Hills Mall!)  These are some of the fun baubles I am eyeing...

I haven't bought LC's new book yet... in fact I just started reading The Fame Game.  I'm so behind.  I have really been loving yellow lately and I need a dress/shirt in this same shade because I love it for blondes.

And that is all for today folks!  Let me leave you with this...
Love him.

Weekend Scenes

Happy Monday all!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  We had a busy, activity-filled weekend!  Gotta keep these kiddos occupied!  On Saturday morning Avery and her bestie were in a little fashion show at Nordstrom.  This was a shopping event but she was so desperate to do it I had to let her.  Of course, she weaseled her way into a few new things after (shopping addict.)

After the shopping extravaganza fashion show we hit up the pumpkin patch for some pumpkins (duh), apples and other delicious goodies!

We had lots of fun but it got super chilly!  Fall is definitely here!

On Sunday we headed into NYC on the train for the first time with the kiddos.  We usually drive because there is so much stuff we end up hauling along with us, but Avery was begging to ride the train.  It was Greyson's first time on the train... he wasn't so sure about the whole thing yet and was definitely way too into trying to touch strangers.

Avery got to see where Daddy works and she was so excited she never wanted to leave.  Too young to work? JK! We hit up Times Square and acted like a bunch of tourists but it was all perfect with our little loud mouths!

We also saw one of these at the train station.  Avery legit asked what it was.

And finally, this is a little snap shot from our evening...

Fun with kids :)

Healthy Eats

I have always been sort of into healthy food... balanced with a hearty taste for pizza, hoagies, and fast food.  In the last couple of years I have gotten more and more into healthy foods and aside from dinner my meals and snacks are almost always healthy (ish...) Here are some of my favorite things that are in regular rotation, almost daily.

My go-to on the go snack.  Only 2 grams of sugar and carbs and 100 calories!  I try to keep one in my purse at all times.

Crack popcorn.  A few large handfuls of this fulfill my salt craving with minimal calories and fat.

This is hands down the best hummus I have ever heard.  However, I can never find it anywhere.  Moral of the story:  if you see it, buy it in bulk and fill your belly with deliciousness!

I love carbs.  I need carbs.  My post-baby body disagrees with me on this.  We compromise with Ezekial bread.  It's healthy and sprout based and pretty tasty to eat!  Most mornings I eat a piece of this toasted with low fat cream cheese and an egg or natural peanut butter and a banana.

I love quinoa.  It has taken the place of rice and some pasta in our house.  It is great as a side dish or to mix with veggies and a protein (ground turkey) as a main dish.  It feels you up and keeps you full!

Oh hey there, how did this slip in here.... this is not the healthiest thing in the world but it is a mommy requirement some days!

What do you eat/recommend that is tasty and healthy?

p.s. please not that I indulged in some left over birthday cake while writing this post.  Oops!

Avery's Birthday Part Deux

I know, I know, you're all sick of the birthday nonsense, but this is the last one for a little bit.  Don't worry, Josh is also an October birthday though mwahaha!

First of all, Greyson had a blast (for the most part.)  This kid LOVES balloons.  He apparently also loves princess crowns.

We had cake, used fun straws, did some coloring...

I love me a good chalkboard sign.  The kids? Not so much.

We made tiaras and decorate pumpkins.  Glitter glue. Was. Everywhere.

And of course, there were some breakdowns had by my children...

I crafted my pants off last week and I think it came together pretty well for hardlyanynotice.  Next year, I will give myself a wee bit more time to plan!  Lesson learned!  Now, we are moving on from birthdays, I promise!
